NIST Flight Training & Exam Prep

This course provides an in-depth examination of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) test methods for evaluating the capabilities and performance of aerial drones, particularly small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). Participants will gain knowledge of standardized testing procedures, performance metrics, and practical applications to ensure drones meet specific operational requirements.  This presentation is an online course that outlines the importance of the test method and familiarizes oneself with NIST’s suite of test methods before actual flight training and the flight exam.

Dr. Irl “Mike” Davis** Professor of UAS Technology, Columbia Gorge Community College Dr. Irl “Mike” Davis is a seasoned expert in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technology, aviation, and international business. With over 40 years of experience spanning aviation management, manufacturing, and global logistics, he brings extensive knowledge to the classroom. Dr. Davis holds a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering, a Master’s in Law, and a degree in Electrical Engineering. As an FAA-certified commercial pilot and remote pilot (Part 107), he has worked extensively in both manned and unmanned aviation, including FAA Part 135 charter operations. He has founded multiple companies, managed international business operations, and played a key role in advancing drone technology education. Dr. Davis is the author of several publications, including *UAS Flight Training Manual* and *UAS Management*, and has contributed to the development of accredited UAS programs. He has also been recognized with prestigious awards such as the FAA’s Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award and the Marco Polo Award for international business excellence. At Columbia Gorge Community College, Dr. Davis leads the UAS Technology program, focusing on training the next generation of drone pilots and aviation professionals.
